The Difference and Application of "Contrast Ratio" and "Dynamic Contrast Ratio" in Projectors

As display devices, projectors, like other flat-panel displays, have the ability to adjust basic image parameters, such as contrast ratio, brightness, color, chroma, sharpness, and color temperature. Contrast ratio adjusts the brightness differences of a signal (image or video).
It enhances or reduces image contrast by increasing or decreasing the grayscale differences between adjacent pixels. By adjusting the contrast ratio, the difference between bright and dark areas in an image can be enhanced or reduced, making the image more vivid and clear. Specifically, when the contrast ratio is increased, the difference between bright and dark areas in the image becomes more pronounced, resulting in a sharper image and more vibrant colors. Conversely, when the contrast ratio is decreased, the difference between bright and dark areas becomes smaller, resulting in a softer image and more muted colors.
Contrast adjustment adjusts the signal amplification, widening the brightness levels while keeping the signal base point constant. Generally, the contrast ratio can be adjusted to an appropriate value based on the environment and the subjective perception of the human eye. (See the diagram below.)
※ Adjusting the contrast ratio to maximum or minimum has no impact on the projector's light source output.
Dynamic Contrast
Attentive users may notice that Panasonic projectors, in addition to the aforementioned contrast ratio (Contrast), also feature a dynamic contrast ratio (Dynamic Contrast).
So, what exactly is dynamic contrast ratio?
● Dynamic contrast ratio is a measure of the projector's own performance.
● The projector's own contrast ratio is calculated by displaying a full-screen white, measuring the brightness value, then displaying a full-screen black, measuring the brightness value again, and dividing by the result. This is usually determined by the product's display device (LCD or DMD) and lens.
● Dynamic contrast ratio involves the projector detecting the APL (Average Image Level) of the input signal and dynamically controlling the laser light source output in real time based on the input signal level.
By modulating the laser light source output and tracking the image associated with the scene frame by frame, excellent black reproduction and high-quality images can be achieved. (Refer to the image below)
Low power consumption is achieved by controlling the laser light source itself. Dynamic contrast enabled is particularly suitable for sharp and dynamic scenes.
※ For projectors using lamp-based light sources, the lamp's own light output cannot be adjusted. Therefore, adding an aperture behind the lamp can achieve the same effect.
